Drink Smarter This Holiday Season

The holiday season is fast approaching. Hooray! It’s the time of the year we all indulge a little more. This may be your families famous Christmas roast or a few drinks near the BBQ with cousin Sam. I know during the holidays we do ‘treat ourselves’ more, but it’s amazing how little we consider about how unhealthy what we drink is. This week  I have shared some info about better alcohol choices, so next time we reach for a drink this holiday season, you might be reaching for a healthier option.

Top things to remember:

Drink straight up. Most calories will come from your mixers. It is sad but true, your fruity cocktails are jam packed full of sugar! Try options like soda water or water with a slice of lime.

Drink water! You are dehydrating your body by drinking alcohol AND it is summer(in Australia) so make sure you drink water to avoid those nasty headaches the next day.

Eat! There is no trick around this, drinking on an empty stomach is NOT a good idea. If you do not eat, you will be the embarrassing Christmas story everyone talks.

Avoid Beer. I know us Aussies love a schooner of two, but I have some bad news it contains about 180 calories and 11 grams of carbohydrates.  That is close to the same amount of calories as a hamburger.

I have prepared an infographic below, you can save this on your phone and pull it out at the bottle shop when you are deciding what to drink on Christmas.
